It’s that time of year again.
Not only have we been treated to almost two weeks of grey skies and heavy rain, while the National news broadcasts and social media are full of stories about monster, killer storms in the Midwest and elsewhere, but here in Florida, Hurricane Season has come yet again.
And once again, we start to see the clarion calls to “Work Weather Magick”, crying out for Prayers and energy, and the casting of Spells to “dissolve the storm!”, “Send it AWAY!”, “Bring good weather and sunshine!”, et cetera, ad nauseum.
Granted, these sorts of posts, emails, and announcements crop up wherever and whenever there is bad weather or unpleasant natural conditions, but as I live here in South Florida, I notice it most keenly right around the onset of Hurricane Season, and again, particularly when any major storm threatens.
I often take exception to the wording of these types of posts and emails, ESPECIALLY when they come from otherwise well balanced and knowledgable Pagans.
I do understand the underlying feeling behind them- the desire to protect not only life and limb, and those held dear, but also all the goods and comforts that we have often worked and struggled so hard to attain and achieve. That is only basic Human instinct. Often these sorts of requests come from very well-meaning individuals. However, they are more often than not based on gut-reaction and survival instinct, and are seldom well thought-through.
After experiencing firsthand the full brunt of Hurricanes Frances, Jeanne, and Wilma, and witnessing the damage they dealt, all in the space of just over a year, believe me, I understand- and I count myself among the fortunate.
But it changes my feeling on the matter not at all.
In my opinion, Nature, and particularly the Weather, are not ours to command or manipulate; at least, not on any large scale.
I realize that exactly these sorts of Prayers, Spells, and Workings have been practiced and performed by our Ancestors for millennia, but I might also point out that, up until the last century, they did not have access to the kind of technology, information, and understanding of environment and ecosphere that we do now. Often their awareness of their environment never extended more than a few miles from their own homes, and many never travelled farther than that in their entire lifetimes. They also lived much closer to the earth and the elements than many of our modern peers could ever hope to. Therefore, their knowledge of the delicate balances of man and his impact on the environment was unparalleled on the small scale, while on the other hand, ours far surpasses that on the grand scale. That being said, their occasional Prayers for rain, or Spell to avert a powerful storm might be justified, as it would affect only a very small and limited area.
We, however, have an awareness of the entire Globe, and her corresponding weather systems. We know where a weather pattern comes from, how wide an area it will affect, and the path that will take, LONG before it threatens, in ways our Ancestors NEVER did.
We have even looked down from the heavens and seen the face and shape of a storm, as they never could.
Yet, with all this knowledge and information, we still pollute and alter our atmosphere, with no way of knowing how to fix it. We have ALREADY influenced and changed our weather, again, on a scale those before us certainly could not have done.
We are informed, we are intelligent, yes, but still, we are not wise ENOUGH.
A far larger awareness of checks and balances must be borne in mind, when considering whether our interference is warranted. We must be aware that the Earth is far more populated in the modern era than in days gone by. We must be aware of the delicate and precarious balance of our biosphere and ecosystem, at this present time.
We must be aware that our Earth and Her climate are already in this current state of flux, due mainly to the meddling, carelessness, greed, and short-sightedness of our species.
Surely, it cannot be wisdom to continue to interfere, by adding Magickal “pollution” to the mix…
Many of us, if not most, subscribe to, and believe deeply in one variation or another of the Gaia Principle- that the Earth, and all of its organisms and ecosystems are interconnected, forming one great living organism. Many also believe that this Being is conscious, aware and sentient. Some even believe that this Being is, in fact, our most poignant, relevant, and immediate Aspect of The Great Mother Goddess.
We already know that almost every weather pattern that exists serves some beneficial purpose. We know that brush and forest fires clear, enrich, and renew the soil where thay have burned. We know that hurricanes churn, stir, and oxygenate the oceans.
Lightning itself may exist for the purpose of balancing Her electrical fields.
If we accept that our Earth is, indeed, alive and aware, then might we also assume that She knows what she is doing?
Granted, these storms and other occurrences do wreak havoc, and even cause great damage to the infrastructures we have created, but it is we who choose to live in their paths, and so, must accept that risk.
I saw a particularly disturbing request for energy recently, on a social network, concerning the recent outbreak of devastating storms and tornadoes in Oklahoma.
This “Weather Witch”, as she referred to herself, posted the following- “APB to all weather witches, sorcerers, sorceresses and magicians – let’s break this m/f down – tornadoes now moving through Tulsa, OK area – and eastward. May all the machines exciting these tornadoes break down now! So mote it be”
When I questioned this in the comment area, she hinted that she had been “consulted by the AF”, and had information that there were secret government “Weather Control Machines” behind them, and continued with, “That’s it! I’m making the call!”
She, of course, did not enlighten the rest of her intended readership as to the source or type of information that she was privy to, and was quite incensed that I should question her.
I find this sort of thing downright irresponsible. It is asking for countless well-meaning people to contribute energy toward breaking down a dangerous, but natural weather system, based on the suspicion of a clandestine technological conspiracy, solely because she claimed to have proof, which she failed to share. We must simply take her word and trust her on this one.
Meanwhile, the energy from those individuals that do contribute generates how much more interference and possible damage?
If we do subscribe to the belief that Gaia is alive and aware, and that She is, in fact, part of the physical Aspect of The Goddess, then it naturally follows that we must assume She has Her own agenda.
If that is the case, far be it for me to attempt to meddle in Her affairs, nor would I advise others to do so. It is not my place to “make the call”. In Greek mythology, that is called “hubris”, and it seldom ends well. This little Witch will not be attempting to tell Her what She can and cannot do with Her Earth.
She may be working to heal Herself and correct the Balance. she may even have begun to reach the end of Her Patience, and begun to ” clean house”, as it were.
Regardless, one thing is certain. “Mother knows best.”, and we might do well to keep it in mind.
She does not need our help or interference. She is more than capable of defending Herself, and appears to be doing just that. We often just don’t happen to like it, because by the time She is finished, our entire greed driven, selfish, and polluting way of life will be forever altered. We may lose our technology, our cars, our dirty energy, and may very well be FORCED to return to living with and close to the Earth, as our ancestors did. This thought makes us very uncomfortable, and so, we “pray” and “work Magick” to “protect” our current way of life, and keep us in our comfort zones, whenever a storm or natural catastrophe threatens. Make no mistake, She will defend Herself, and She WILL win.
We just might not be very comfortable when She does.
If we really wish to assist Her, then we must, Pagan and non Pagan alike, continue to examine and adjust in ways that work toward immediately lessening our current and long-term negative impact on the environment and the climate, as individuals, families, households, work environments, and organizations. Time is of the essence, as our weather shows quite poignantly.
When storm or disaster threatens, BY ALL MEANS pray and work Magick to protect life and limb, loved ones, and those in its path. We can Magically, as well as physically reinforce and shore up or homes as best we can, and ask that no harm be done, but if we are, indeed, the “Wise Ones”, we will leave the weather itself ALONE, and assume that “Mother knows best”, while She goes about Her Work.
Blessed be, all, and be safe this Hurricane Season.
